The Deering Gabriella Banjo

The pinnacle of the luthier's art is bringing together musical excellence and sculptural artistic expression. One without the other denies the completion of this magical union. The Deering Gabriella banjo is a supreme vision of this magic that embodies the superlative tone, responsiveness, richness, clarity, dynamic power, ease of playing, sweetness and full bodied sound combined with a sculptural masterpiece of breathtaking elegance, meticulous craftsmanship, beautifully ornate design, rare and exotic materials and precision construction. A magnificent work of art that is an inspirational joy to play. The Gabriella neck and resonator are constructed of the exceedingly rare and beautiful Brazilian rosewood. This supreme tonewood is coveted for its deep color and exotic grain and the bold, rich, powerful, yet sweet sound it produces. The dark rich color of the resonator is a vibrant and elegant contrast for the intertwined maple and pearl vine relief that visually dances around the back of the resonator in a delicate and graceful ballet of golden maple and translucent, iridescent mother of pearl. The sides of the bound resonator have two colorful strips of abalone shell that circle the resonator like stripes of liquid jewel and, like the vine relief on the back of the resonator, are prominently elegant when painstakingly inlaid next to the exotic grain and deep color of the Brazilian rosewood. The interior sidewalls of this sculpturally exquisite resonator are tapered to increase the clarity and responsiveness as well as the overall volume and dynamic power. The Brazilian rosewood neck has a relief carved heel. It is meticulously carved with raised design and textured background. The neck, like the resonator, is ivoroid bound with a bound peghead and an ivoroid heel cap. Next to the binding on the neck and around the heel cap is a purling strip of sparkling, colorful abalone shell. Dozens of small pieces of abalone shell are meticulously fitted and inlaid into the groove which forms a seamless line of colorful shell on both sides of the neck, around the heel next to the cap (the same as the resonator). The showpiece fingerboard is all mother of pearl with inlays set into the mother of pearl fingerboard. The inlays are reminiscent of, though different than, the vine motif that is on the back of the resonator. This is a slow and tedious process that can only be done one way: correctly. The intricate vine motif inlay of the ebony peghead is mother of pearl and hand engraved for ornately delicate artistic texture. While hand engraving mother of pearl is slow and labor intensive, it is a most expressively beautiful way to create a three dimensional visual appearance. This vine motif of the peghead creates a dynamic continuity of the vine motif on the back of the resonator. The elegant, ornate and complex inlay aesthetic is highly prominent and breathtaking. The timeless style of this banjo's ornamentation shows a reverence for the traditional yet transcends tradition and current styles creating it's own aesthetic that will always be a premiere showpiece for it's owner. The thick, rich 24 karat gold plating on the engraved metal parts, compliments and is complemented by the color of the rosewood. The gun engraving process is a very old, painstaking and time consuming process. It is done by a craftsman each line being carefully thought out and precisely executed by the deft hand of the artist. In addition to the deeply cut engraving the Gabriella's armrest and tailpiece are filagreed; again a tedious process that creates a depth and dimension that is elegance itself. By nature, each of the engraved banjos is subtlely different, even though the overall pattern is the same; which contributes to the uniqueness of each individual Gabriella. Your Gabriella is uniquely yours; even with no other custom features. The gold plated planet style tuning machines are fitted with solid mother of pearl knobs. (The fifth string also has a mother of pearl knob.) The Deering sand cast virgin bell bronze tone ring and one piece zinc alloy resonator flange are thickly gold plated and precision fitted to a three ply rock maple rim that is stained to color blend with the rosewood neck and resonator. The two gold plated coordinator rods in the pot of the Gabriella not only ensure the tight neck joint for optimum vibration transfer, but add a striking visual dimension if a clear head is ever installed on top of the gold plated tone ring. In a world of fast paced living, of faster and faster communication technology and planned obsolescence ( that makes most possessions utilitarian to the extreme), the Deering Gabriella banjo is a luxurious, timeless work of art: a pinnacle of the luthier's accomplishment; an uncompromising idea in a world of compromise, that will be treasured now and for future generations as one of the great banjos of all time. The Ivanhoe

One of our most desirable and exquisite banjos, the Ivanhoe is a signature model built in The Custom Shop on special order. If you want a banjo that is as beautiful as it sounds, you will cherish having an Ivanhoe. Deering reserves the most highly figured walnut for the neck and the most rare pieces of exotic burl walnut veneer for the resonator. The beautiful veneer on the resonator is the same veneer as used on the inside of a Rolls Royce. Deering does something very special with the inlays by setting abalone shell into mother-of-pearl and then inlaying them both flawlessly into the ebony fingerboard. Shell inlaid into shell is a rare skill that we have mastered. The abalone adds a colorful sparkle of blue, green, and red to the white mother-of-pearl inlays. Also, along the edges of the neck and resonator the ivoroid binding is dressed up with multi-colored trim of hand-set abalone shell. The neck is fully adjustable, as are all Deering necks, with our two-way adjustable truss-rod. The Ivanhoe features our three-ply hard rock maple rim trimmed with ivoroid binding, our zinc flange, and our sand-cast virgin bell bronze tone-ring giving it the finest sound possible. You'll find superb craftsmanship in every aspect of the Ivanhoe. From the triple bound peghead to the hand-carved heel and the superbly engraved gold plated metal parts. (See The Custom Shop) The intricate pierced armrest accented with elegant floral engraving as shown on the cover of the 1994 catalog is only available on the Ivanhoe. It is a work of art that will be treasured for generations to come. With the exceptional tone quality and feel of the neck it's more than just a show piece, it's a banjo player's dream. Greg Deering Limited

Exquisite craftsmanship and functional elegance are combined to create the G.D.L. banjo. As on the Ivanhoe, patience and care go into cutting the many strips of multicolored abalone shell which are inlaid beside the ivoroid binding, trimming the figured walnut neck and burl walnut resonator. Intricate abalone and mother-of-pearl inlays adorn the ebony fingerboard and peghead. As on the Ivanhoe, the peghead is bound with white/black/white stripes on the face and side, we call this triple bound. The G.D.L. features the same tone-ring and flange construction as the Ivanhoe, however all metal parts are nickel plated. One popular option of the exotic maple neck and burl maple resonator with either a blond or a cremona sunburst finish. The G.D.L. draws admiration for its vibrant beauty as well as the superior sound quality. It's an investment you'll be glad you made every time you play it. * Deering was the first to use a zinc flange, to re-create the sound that was once only available from pre-war banjos. The zinc flange is a feature on all models from the Sierra to the top of the line. List Price $6759. Please call us for our discount and "best" prices.

Mother-of-pearl scroll inlays adorn the ebony fingerboard. The neck has a two-way adjustable truss-rod, as do all Deering banjos. Bound in white, the peghead has an elegantly finished look. the slender neck shape is fast and easy to play. The Golden Era

The Golden Era banjo is a unique model of the Deering line. It's designed to reproduce the most sought-after five-string banjos of the pre-war era. The unique features of the Golden Era are the thicker neck shape which creates more sustain and the deeper resonator which provides that warm gutsy tone. We use a Brazilian rosewood fingerboard to maintain every detail exactly the way pre-war banjos were made. However, this banjo can be specially ordered with an ebony fingerboard as a custom option. The flame Eastern hard rock maple of the neck and resonator are stained with a cremona sunburst stain. Mother-of-pearl inlays are the traditional "Hearts and Flowers" pattern. The Maple rim is turned to traditional dimensions and mounted with a zinc flange, twenty-hole virgin bell bronze tone-ring and presto style tailpiece with careful attention to original dimensions to recreate the sound and performance traditionalists desire. 5-String List Price $4559. The John Hartford

The John Hartford model has two very special advantages. First -- it is lighter weight than most other bluegrass banjos, and secondly it has an amazing tone. It sounds like a vintage pre-war banjo. But the unusual thing is that as it ages, it "plays-in" like a violin and gains in volume and presence the more it is played. We've seen it out-do even the best bronze tone-ring banjos in jam sessions. The Hartford is made of flamed maple and stained to a warm brown. It has the look of a vintage instrument, not glossy, but hand rubbed to create a smooth, fast feel. The "steamboat gothic" inlay pattern reflects John's enthusiasm for steamboats. Greg's years of experience with various woods combined with John's research into the design of vintage banjos culminated in the idea of using a "Granadillo tone-ring" made from a wood used on marimbas. This unique tone-ring is mounted on a three-ply maple rim with a zinc flange to create a wood-rim, lighter weight (8 lbs instead of 11 or 12) banjo a very good choice for bluegrass as well as other styles! With the custom option of a pop-on resonator, and assembling the banjo with a light weight tube for open-back playing, you can have a banjo which is easily convertible from open-back to bluegrass style, weighing 6 lbs with the resonator and only 5 lbs without -- the same as a guitar! (shown on page 2 & 3). More expensive to produce than a bell bronze tone-ring, the Hartford tone-ring comes standard on the John Hartford model and can be ordered as a custom option on other models from the Sierra on up the line. List Price $4399 Fret model List $4492. Please call us for our discount and "best" prices.

Black Diamond

The Black Diamond banjo evolved from requests for a fancier banjo than the Deluxe but with the same sweet tone of a mahogany banjo. The mother-of-pearl diamond shaped inlays are hand-engraved. This kind of detailing requires the skills of a master craftsman and pays off in added beauty. A maple stripe accentuates the black binding around the resonator and the side of the ebony fingerboard. The banjo head is made of black mylar so the color will not scratch off. You get the same three-ply maple rim, virgin bell bronze sand cast tone-ring, zinc flange and nickel plated hardware on the Black Diamond that you get on the most expensive Deering models. The sweet sounding Black Diamond has a very refined and showy appearance. The shiny black head and black trim give it a modern and progressive look. It's the only model with the inlays hand engraved giving it a very classy appearance. It's an excellent performing banjo and a hot looking banjo as well. List Price $3599. Please call us for our discount and "best" prices.

Black Diamond long-neck

If you want more flexibility in your range, this banjo is for you. It can be capoed at the third fret and played as a regular 5-string in the key of G or left open and played in the key of E. The lower range is great for sing-alongs. The Black Diamond Long Neck banjo has an adjustable tropical American mahogany neck with an ebony fingerboard and engraved diamond shaped mother-of-pearl inlays. The three-ply maple rim, bell bronze tonering, and brass tube give this banjo more volume and clarity than you expect. Standard plating on all Deering banjos is nickel unless ordered as a custom option in chrome or gold. Long Neck Openback List Price $ 3939. Please call us for our discount and "best" prices.

Deluxe

The Deluxe is one of the most popular models of the Deering line. The gloss finish, ebony fingerboard, diamond shaped inlays, and extra trim on the back of the resonator and along the edge of the peghead are features that make a more elegant instrument. The mahogany neck and resonator create a sweet tone. Made with the same three-ply maple rim, sand-cast virgin bell bronze tone-ring, zinc flange, and nickel plated metal parts that we use on our most expensive banjos, the Deluxe offers a great sound. It is basically the same as the top-of-the-line but without the most costly cosmetics. It's great sounding, great playing, and great looking. Dollar for dollar, the Deluxe is one of the best banjo values available anywhere.5-String List Price $ 3159. 6-String Guitar-banjo version list price $. 4-String Tenor List $3449 or Plectrum List Price $3449. Sierra

The Sierra is Deering's most popular model because it is very affordable and you get all the important features that affect the tone and playability. Greg Deering explains it best: "No one can buy a better banjo! They could buy a fancier one but not a better one. The satin finished mahogany neck is made the same as every one of our necks - fast, comfortable, and precise. A masterpiece of playability! The pot or drum assembly is the best quality money can buy. It has our 3-ply maple rim, our top quality sand-cast virgin bell bronze tone-ring, and our own one piece cast zinc flange. In fact, it is the exact same pot Deering uses on most of their more expensive banjos all the way up to the Gabriella! Back in the 60's when I was making the rounds of the music stores and pawn shops, I experienced a great frustration. Every good banjo I found had a price tag that made it impossible to buy. I was looking for a good banjo that I could afford! One that I never found. And I never forgot that hunger, that thirst, that empty feeling when I had to pull out that crummy old banjo to play for a packed house. Since then it has been my personal crusade to build the ultimate banjo that anyone could afford and play with pride knowing he is providing the very best music possible. Adjusted for inflation, I could have afforded a Sierra banjo. Some of our competitors may have a banjo in the same price range but there is a big difference when you play them side by side. The Sierra banjo is truly a new achievement. It is the best banjo to start out with. It is a perfect banjo to play for your entire career. It is the best back-up banjo for your fancy banjo and it is actually even better that a lot of the fancy banjos you may find. No banjo player is complete without a Sierra banjo!" - Greg Deering . ...5-String List Price $2549, Lefty $2659, 4-String Tenor or Plectrum $2779. Please call us for our discount and "best" prices.

Boston

Deering calls this first model of their line the Boston banjo to acknowledge the people of Boston who produced many fine banjos in the earlier part of this century. For parking-lot picking the Boston rings out loud and clear. The thick steel rim which is unique to the Deering line produces a sound similar to a bronze tone-ring and enables you to get a much more affordable banjo. One way to experience the excellent quality of the Boston banjo is to close your eyes and compare the sound to other banjos in the same price range. The Boston provides exceptional tone which is far superior to the tone of the die-cast brass tone-rings or aluminum rims of the imports. Playing is always more fun when you enjoy the sound of your banjo. You'll progress much faster and enjoy playing more with a Boston compared to a lower priced import that's hard to play. The Boston banjo makes playing easier because the banjo works with you, not against you. The Boston has the same adjustable mahogany neck, rosewood fingerboard and mother-of-pearl dot inlays, and satin finish as the Sierra. The primary difference is in the drum assembly which is a 3/16" thick steel rim but rings like a tone-ring. The 24-piece flange and steel rim give you a very enjoyable tone. We use high quality sealed guitar-style tuners because they provide a 6:1 gear ratio for accuracy in tuning. The fifth peg is geared as well. The 24-piece flange design allows you to convert this banjo to open-back by removing the flange pieces and resonator. 5-String List Price $1799, Lefty $1919, Long-neck openback version $2271, 4-String Tenor or Plectrum $1979, 6-String Guitar-banjo version, B-6: $2029. 6 String Guitar-banjo

If you already play guitar and have thought that it would be fun to learn to play the banjo here is your instrument. Now you can play banjo with the same chords and fingering you already know. It's great for those songs that would sound better if played on a banjo. The 6-string banjo idea came to Greg Deering after he heard a song called "Desert Pete" on one of the Kingston Trio albums. He tried for weeks to figure it out on the 5-string banjo. Later he learned that it had been recorded by Glen Campbell on a 6-string banjo. In examining older 6-string banjos, Greg observed the consistent lack of good tone. So he decided to determine why it never sounded quite right. He solved this mystery and now we produce the only 6-string banjos with great sustain and beautiful tone. You get the same adjustable mahogany neck on the D-6 and B-6. It features an arched ebony fingerboard with mother-of-pearl dot inlays and 22 frets. The tropical American mahogany provides a sweet and singing tone. B-6 The B-6, Boston 6-string is lighter weight. The drum assembly is like the Boston 5-string model and produces a good, clean sound. It has a satin finish. D-6 The D-6, Deluxe 6-string, with its 3-ply maple rim and virgin bell bronze tone-ring provides a completely professional sound with more sustain and excellent clarity. Both instruments come with compensated bridges for accurate intonation. The most appealing aspect of our 6 & 12-string banjos is the fact that our necks are sleek and comfortable - easy to play. Boston 6-string . . . List Price $2029. Deluxe (D-6) 6-string. . . List Price $3199. MB-6 List $5169. D-12 List $5299. Please call us for our discount and "best" prices.

12 String

If you play 12-string guitar, you won't believe the tremendous sound you get when playing the same style on the 12-string banjo! Deering didn't believe it until after they built the first one custom for Barry Hunn and then heard him play it. It is capable of a powerful sound and presence while also able to produce music so sweet that it seems to have been brought down from heaven with the angels. It is tuned just like a 12-string guitar, and you use the same chords and fingering - nothing new to learn. The 12-string banjo is built similar to a Deluxe banjo but with a special tailpiece and compensated bridge. The mahogany neck shape is very comfortable and easy to play. Diamond shaped mother-of-pearl inlays are set into the arched ebony fingerboard. The action is excellent. D-12 List $5299

Crossfire

The Crossfire is an electric guitar shape with versatile electronics and a plastic banjo head. When you play the patented Crossfire electric banjo you gain the ability to play as loudly as an electric guitar without the feedback problems you have with an amplified acoustic banjo. Not only can you adjust your sound by turning the tone knob from bass to treble, but the volume knob also gives you immediate control over your output. With the Crossfire you have all the power you need and you are in full control! The Crossfire has two powerful magnetic pickups under the head, one in the neck position and the other by the bridge. Metal is attached to the feet of the bridge so that the pickups draw sound from both the strings and the head. Active electronics assure you of a wide frequency response. By retaining a full and functional banjo head, this new instrument gets more banjo sound than a solid body electric banjo. A brass tone-ring is under the head. The hooks for tightening the head pass through the alder body and are adjusted from the back in recessed holes. Standard color is black but other colors can be custom ordered. The neck is maple with an ebony fingerboard and diamond shaped mother-of-pearl inlays. Guitar-style tuners provide accuracy in tuning and allow the Crossfire to fit in an electric guitar case. Knobs adjust tone and volume and a switch selects between the pickups or in the middle position plays them both. Imagine, adjusting the bass or treble on your banjo at the turn of a knob or just flipping a switch to get a different sound! We recommend that you use a keyboard amp or an amplifier with a horn in it to get the full banjo sound. Guitar amps have a limited range of sounds and don't pick up the banjo highs. One unique advantage in owning a Crossfire is the ability to practice almost silently. By using a pair of amplified headphones which plug directly into the instrument you alone can hear yourself play. The Crossfire is the only banjo which is fully equipped to participate as an equal in all musical styles without the volume limitations. Just as an electric guitar sounds different from an acoustic, the Crossfire sounds similar but not exactly the same as an acoustic banjo. It allows banjo players to transcend the limits of an acoustic banjo. The Custom Crossfire pictured here is natural wood with a black head. A popular custom option is vintage sunburst, or custom colors. See the custom options price list for the cost on custom colors. Most colors are available including metallic colors. If you send a sample of what you would like we will do our best to match it. Crossfires are available in tenor, plectrum, left-handed and long neck styles in addition to the 5-string shown here. List Price $3389. Please call us for our discount and "best" prices.

The Maple Blossom

The Maple Blossom is an excellent banjo with a crisp, clear tone. The Eastern hard rock maple neck and resonator are stained a walnut color, and trimmed in white binding with a decorative black stripe. The feel of binding provides a more comfortable neck. Flower shaped mother-of-pearl inlays are set in an ebony fingerboard. The three-ply maple rim, sand cast virgin bell bronze tone-ring and zinc flange construction generate an excellent tone in the Maple Blossom. These features and price make the Maple Blossom one of the favorites.

Maple Blossom

Tenor, Plectrum, Six-String, Long Neck, Left-Handed, Open Back Deering is one of the only companies still making 4-string banjos, and certainly the only American maker of reasonably priced 4-string banjos. Here we are showing the Maple Blossom Tenor, Plectrum, and 6-string banjos to illustrate how you can choose a model and order it from the Custom Shop in another style: Tenor, Plectrum, 6-string, Long Neck, Left-handed, or Open Back. You can read the details of the model on the 5-string page and then custom order a similar banjo in the style you wish. For example, to find the details about the construction of the Maple Blossom 4-string banjos read the Maple Blossom 5-string information and then refer to the chart of banjo dimensions on the back of the catalog. This will give you specifics about the 4-string Maple Blossom banjos. The models Deering normally makes in the 4-string style are the Boston and the Sierra banjos. The tenor and plectrum Boston or Sierra banjos can be ordered from us on a special order basis. Aside from the obvious difference in the style of the neck, the only other change Deering makes for the four string banjos is, instead of a frosted top head, you get a smooth head, so that when you strum chords and brush the head you don't get any noise from passing over a rough surface. Tenor banjos are great for mandolin or violin players because they are tuned a fifth lower and can be chorded with the same fingering as a violin or mandolin. This feature contributed to the popularity of the tenor banjo during the dixieland jazz era of the early 1900's. It was a new sound immediately available to the many violinists and mandolinists of the day, and it's popularity is still alive today. It is often used in Irish music. If you play violin or mandolin already and want another new sound, try a tenor banjo. The term "long neck" can be very confusing when talking with 5-string and 4-string banjo players because to the 5-string player a long neck banjo has twenty-five frets, three more than a standard 5-string banjo and is open-back (has no resonator) - as pictured on page 22. To a 4-string banjoist a long neck banjo is the same as a plectrum banjo with 22 frets, simply longer as compared to a tenor banjo which only has 19 frets. And so, the term "long neck" can refer to either the 5-string or 4-string banjos with a completely different meaning. The 6-string banjos were used in the early 1900's in some of the jazz bands but they never really caught on because the sound wasn't quite right. Deering is the only maker today who has mastered the 6-string banjos to bring out a wonderful banjo tone and make the instrument a joy to play. Many guitar players are now discovering the new sound available from playing a Deering 6-string banjo. Anything you play on a guitar can also be played on the 6-string banjo. It can be flat-picked or finger-picked equally well. Deering strings it with extra light acoustic guitar strings, however it does perform well with other string gauges. 4-String Tenor List Price $4319. 5-String List Price $3949. 6-String List Price $5169. Good Time Banjo

The Good Time banjo was a dream of Greg Deering's to produce a great sounding, easy to play and easy to maintain banjo that everyone could afford. The Goodtime banjo is made in America, within the Deering factory and is designed to produce the finest tone and playability possible for the lowest possible price. The rock maple neck has the frets fitted into the neck the same way many of the classic (now collector's item) electric guitars in the '60's were made and are still made today. This technique has passed the test of time. The neck has a slender, low profile that makes it a joy to play for hands of all sizes. The fret work is precise and accurate and Good Time banjos have an ever growing reputation for having clear and beautiful intonation. The tuning machines are all geared with a geared fifth peg for effortless and precise tuning. The position markers on the fingerboard are inlaid dots of black delrin. The Good Time rim is made of a rock maple and birch laminated rim. Laminated in the same style as the classic banjos from the 20's, this rim is durable, stable and produces a clear, sweet tone. Most banjos in this price range have rims of aluminum which has good structural integrity but cannot compare to the tone of the seasoned hardwoods used in the Good Time rim. Some companies advertise a "hardwood" rim but don't tell you what kind of wood is actually used. Rock maple and birch are very similar in hardness and both have a vibrant resonance that cannot be duplicated with softer hardwoods. The diameter of the rim is a standard 11" so heads are easy to find. There are 16 brackets and a patent pending adjustable tailpiece designed by Deering. The tailpiece follows a traditional style and allows thorough and complete adjustments to the playability of the banjo. The metal parts are nickel plated. The Good Time banjo is played by top professionals, travelers, beginners and everyone who wants a high quality banjo for a low price. Since it's introduction there have been copycat banjos imported to compete with the Good Time and we encourage you to compare them. You will find that virtually all of them have emphasized the appearance instead of tone and playability. The Good Time banjo is designed for easy playing and sparkling, vibrant tone. In the final analysis, the Good Time banjo is truly in a class by itself and is only overshadowed by banjos costing 5 times as much. Don't settle for a high gloss imitation with plastic inlays that do nothing for sound or playability. Get the only low-priced banjo made in America that was made to be played; backed up by a family-owned and operated company that has dedicated 25 years to producing the finest banjos money can buy.
