76-8766 Rickenbacker (used, June 1992) LEFTY Model 4001C64 FG Reissue electric bass, Fireglo, #F5-7065, in excellent condition with original, slightly worn, hard shell case.
The first Rickenbacker electric bass was the model 4000 which debuted in June of 1957 (compare date to Fender Precision Bass in November of 1951 and Jazz Bass in 1960). . Rickenbacker definitely had their own design ideas. On the original one-pickup instrument, the Model 4000, their body design is called a “Cresting Wave”, their pickup was of the “horseshoe magnet” persuasion. The headstock shape echoed this “cresting wave,” the fingerboard was rosewood and unbound, said fingerboard sported only dotmarker inlays (nothing fancy), the body was originally comprised of a mahogany center piece (neck through into the body) and maple “wings” on each side of the body. The bass was often used by professionals with flatwound strings. In November of 1961 Rickenbacker came out with a two-pickup, slightly fancier version they called the “4001” model. This extremely successful model remained in the line until 1987. In the meantime, they came out with its future replacement, the 4003 model in 1979. This version was not very different in design from the 4001, but it was designed for roundwound strings. In 1984 the pickguard was redesigned as a one-piece white plastic unit (it had been two piece from 1979 to 1984) and the truss rod access was moved to the headstock, located under the nearly 6 ½” long, scimitar-blade “Rickenbacker” white cover with black lettering. The 4003 was also a successful model but, due to user demand for the earlier style Rickenbacker reissued the 4001, calling it a 4001V63 in the year 1984. Rickenbacker, itself, says of the current model, currently named 4001C64: “From Liverpool in 1963 to the present day, this instrument meticulously recreates the greatest ancestor of the industry standard bass guitar. It is authentic in every detail, even to the 'horseshoe' bass pickup of 1931. A fully laminated neck with striped headstock runs the full length of the body for unparalleled tone and sustain. The only concession to modern technology has been a redesigned dual truss rod system.” In the past this model was available in Lefty, but not any more. That option has, at least for now, disappeared. We present to you, then, a hard-to-find model, the lefty 4001C64 Reissue in excellent condition showing normal light signs of use and wear including some scuffs on the edges of the headstock, some small chips around mostly the side and a few light scratches. It works fine, the tuners (scalloped button, open-gear, Rickenbacker logo) and truss rod work fine, it sounds wonderful (you will recall that Paul McCartney has used a Rickenbacker lefty bass on many of his finest recordings). With original silver hard shell rectangular case with black leatherette ends, this bass is reasonably priced at $2572 at our discount price, $2495 at our cash discount price.
78-7632 Rickenbacker (used, December 1986) Black Shadow Model 4003 bass, Limited Edition, #ZL-3255, black body, back of neck and headstock, original black rectangular hard shell case.
According to Wikipedia the Rickenbacker 4003 Shadow – Limited Edition bass – features an all black body, checkerboard binding, and black dot “S” type neck with binding, and black hardware. They say that the Shadow was produced for the 50th store opening celebration at Guitar Center. The original pickups are 4003 Hi-Gains, in black trim surrounds. One respondent writes: “All the 4003 Shadows I know of were made in late 1986 – the first letter “Z” means 1986. It’s an amazing instrument,” he says, “and IMHO the best looking Ric bass.” A website called “RickResource.com” says 4003 "Shadow" This bass is similar to the 4003 model. Features: Black bound Padouk fingerboard, 9 black dot inlays, black hardware, black old style knobs, black pickguard and truss rod cover, block binding, Jetglo finished body and neck. –Introduced - 1986-89? (question mark theirs) and discontinued in 1989? – (question mark theirs). This example of the Black Shadow bass shows normal signs of use and wear, chips on the edges, a big chip of finish missing on the back under the heel, chips on back of neck, finger erosion through the finish and into the wood on the bass side of the pickguard on the face, oxidation on the metal parts including the bridge saddles, black paint chipped off of the surround around the bridge pickup, rust on virtually all screws, chips on the edges of the headstock especially near the top. The long truss rod cover bears the “Rickenbacker” logo with “Made in USA” below; the fingerboard is beautifully grained and hosts 9 black markers in 8 positions; there is a black neck pickup within the L-shaped pickguard and a black painted hand-rest over the bridge pickup. Four old style black 7-sided knobs reside in the lower treble bout along with a three way toggle with a black cap. The serial number appears on the long rectangular metal plate that houses the mono and stereo phone jacks on the lower treble side. The top is bordered in white-black checkerboard, the fingerboard in black with a line of padouk on the side. There is a large chip out of the treble side of the fretboard at the 7th fret and a slightly smaller one at the 12th fret, treble side. We would, overall, call this level of condition “Very Good.” Per our workshop, everything checks out okay – it shows wear but it is wholly original and it sounds terrific! $3,810 or at our cash discount price $3,695.

15-6397 Fender (used, 1979) Precision Bass, natural finish, #S866609, maple board, in excellent condition with original hard shell case.
This very fine bass guitar shows light normal signs of ordinary use and wear including nicks, scratches, dings and some light buckle marks on back. We do not think the cover over the pickups remains with the instrument but the cover for the bridge is in the case. It has the long, peninsular, amorphous white and black bordered pickguard, the two large corrugated controls for volume and tone, and the twin single coil black pickups in the bridge position. The hard shell case is missing one of its latches. $2,056 or at our cash discount price $1,995.
