15-5742 C F Martin (new, lefty) Model HD - Elliott Easton, #1176882, in solid quilted mahogany sides and back with a solid Adirondack spruce top.
A superb sounding, highly select variation on the D-18 co-designed by one of America’s finest left-handed players. This is a dovetail joint (meaning classy, high-level) guitar having mahogany blocks, a fourteen fret neck, and it maybe the first Martin that bears the appellation of HD but is made from mahogany. So, it’s kind of an HD-18. It has fine herringbone top and soundhole border, grained ivoroid binding, a bone nut and a Tusq compensated saddle, a modified V-shaped neck, 1 11/16th’ nut width, 2 1/8” bridge spacing at the saddle, polished gloss body finish – with aging toner on the top. The neck is also finished in polished gloss, the headstock has the square taper and the diamond dart on the back, the back is inlaid in black/white Boltaron®, the fingerboard is inlaid with diamonds and squares in the “long” pattern; the bridge and end pinds are white with tortoise colored dots. Tuners are actual gold plated Waverly brand open-gears with butterbean button. The manufacturer provides a strap lock type of pin on the treble side; the pickguard is faux tortoise shell with beveled edges. The interior paper label is signed by C F Martin IV and Elliot Easton, and each guitar is individually numbered – this one being numbered #22. We present a colossal sounding, gorgeous guitar, and for the left handed player, an honest-to-godsend. For those what need an explanation, that means a desirable or needed thingie or event that happens unexpectedly. C F Martin is sold out of this guitar model entirely. If you want it, here it is . . . come and get it (gee that sounds familiar). The Martin List is $4898 and the Martin MAP is something like $3625.

76-8766 Rickenbacker (used, June 1992) LEFTY Model 4001C64 FG Reissue electric bass, Fireglo, #F5-7065, in excellent condition with original, slightly worn, hard shell case.
The first Rickenbacker electric bass was the model 4000 which debuted in June of 1957 (compare date to Fender Precision Bass in November of 1951 and Jazz Bass in 1960). . Rickenbacker definitely had their own design ideas. On the original one-pickup instrument, the Model 4000, their body design is called a “Cresting Wave”, their pickup was of the “horseshoe magnet” persuasion. The headstock shape echoed this “cresting wave,” the fingerboard was rosewood and unbound, said fingerboard sported only dotmarker inlays (nothing fancy), the body was originally comprised of a mahogany center piece (neck through into the body) and maple “wings” on each side of the body. The bass was often used by professionals with flatwound strings. In November of 1961 Rickenbacker came out with a two-pickup, slightly fancier version they called the “4001” model. This extremely successful model remained in the line until 1987. In the meantime, they came out with its future replacement, the 4003 model in 1979. This version was not very different in design from the 4001, but it was designed for roundwound strings. In 1984 the pickguard was redesigned as a one-piece white plastic unit (it had been two piece from 1979 to 1984) and the truss rod access was moved to the headstock, located under the nearly 6 ½” long, scimitar-blade “Rickenbacker” white cover with black lettering. The 4003 was also a successful model but, due to user demand for the earlier style Rickenbacker reissued the 4001, calling it a 4001V63 in the year 1984. Rickenbacker, itself, says of the current model, currently named 4001C64: “From Liverpool in 1963 to the present day, this instrument meticulously recreates the greatest ancestor of the industry standard bass guitar. It is authentic in every detail, even to the 'horseshoe' bass pickup of 1931. A fully laminated neck with striped headstock runs the full length of the body for unparalleled tone and sustain. The only concession to modern technology has been a redesigned dual truss rod system.” In the past this model was available in Lefty, but not any more. That option has, at least for now, disappeared. We present to you, then, a hard-to-find model, the lefty 4001C64 Reissue in excellent condition showing normal light signs of use and wear including some scuffs on the edges of the headstock, some small chips around mostly the side and a few light scratches. It works fine, the tuners (scalloped button, open-gear, Rickenbacker logo) and truss rod work fine, it sounds wonderful (you will recall that Paul McCartney has used a Rickenbacker lefty bass on many of his finest recordings). With original silver hard shell rectangular case with black leatherette ends, this bass is reasonably priced at $2572 at our discount price, $2495 at our cash discount price.

15-5047 Eastman (new) Model MD-615L LEFTY mandolin #779, vintage sunburst, vintage 2006, with hard shell case.
We believe in having lefty instruments for our sinestral constituency and at this time we have two – this MD-615 and a slightly more upgrade Gretsch MD-815. The -615 is a handsome creature, having crème-black-crème top binding, and single-ply ivoroid side and back binding, ivoroid neck and headstock binding, 6 abalone “planet style” fingerboard markers in 5 positions, an ivoroid script “Eastman” headstock logo, a two-piece ebony adjustable bridge, a nickel plated one-piece right-angle tailpiece, twin unbound open f-holes, a modified v-shape neck, and a fingerboard that ends with a French curve and three partial frets. The back is a mildly curly maple two-piece with slightly more curly maple sides and no particular grain on the back of the maple neck. Tuners are Schaller with engraved plates on the back, with pearloid buttons. The truss rod cover is ebony. This mandolin, for some reason known only to the revenants who inhabit the showroom late at night, has a tiny chip (or ding as the travelers say) on the treble f-hole. It is entirely innocuous and actually looks quite tasteful and in keeping with the instrument’s vintage character. The sound is typical Eastman – clean and clear. $1240 at our discount price, $1203 at our cash discount price.
48-4210 Eastman (new) Model MD-815L, #242, dark sunburst with golden highlights, vintage 2005, with hard shell case.
Did you know that “Dextrous” comes from the Latin word for “right?” and that the opposite of “sinistral” is “dextral?” This lefty has somewhat upgraded appointments from the MD-615L described above. It has crème-black-crème binding on top, both sides, the back, the fingerboard and the headstock (doing thin, delicate binding like this is very time consuming but it’s beautiful). The “Eastman” script logo headstock set against a polished ebony headplate hosts 8 gold-plated Schaller tuners with ivoroid buttons. The fingerboard is inlaid with 6 bright and gleaming dotmarker inlays in 5 positions; the bottom of the ebony fingerboard bears 3 partial frets and a “scoop.” The bridge is two-piece ebony and adjustable and the tailpiece is a gold-plated metal right-angle hosting an ebony tailpin. The maple on the back is considerably striped a curly, the sides are the same, there’s even a small amount of curl on the back of the one piece, more rounded than v-shaped neck. The sound is clear and clean but it is also rich and fulfilling, allowing the motivated mammal who gets to own it the feeling of being fulfilled and rich. $1560 or at our cash discount price $1513.

78-7514 C F Martin Custom Shop LEFTY (used, 2007) D-28 Marquis in Madagascar Rosewood and Adirondack spruce, #1209096, in excellent plus condition with original hard shell case.
Madagascar rosewood, or Dabergia baroni, is the closest thing in appearance and tone to its sister, Brazilian rosewood (Dalbergia nigra). Originally purchased from us on 4/19/07 this is an absolutely magnificent guitar that has been maintained in excellent plus condition. Here’s what Luthier’s Mercantile (this guitar’s wood did not necessarily come from this wood supplier) says about Madagascar Rosewood (quoted verbatim): “The material that we receive for backs and sides is the variety known in wood circles there as ‘Rio’ type – because it can resemble the best figured Brazilian Rosewood in appearance and sound. This lumber is perfect tonewood for the backs and sides of steel string and classical guitars. Every piece is cut from very straight grain lumber that is entirely quartersawn and has been very well dried. Every side and back piece stays flat and stable, and every piece has incredible, crisp, bell-like tap tones. This wood has all of the best attributes of the old Brazilian Rosewood – brilliant, deep colors (red/orange, red/brown, brown, purple/brown) with intense black line patterning, clear ringing tap tone, easy to bend and work.” Because it was occasionally played, there is a slightly dulled area near the edge of the lower bass bout where the arm passes over the body. It shows tiny indications that it has, in the past, been held and played (button marks but they are so surface, a small scratch near the soundhole – nothing really). Its tuners are the burnished butterbean Martin logo open-backs; the headplate could be Madagascar but it looks like Brazilian (as Maddy is wont to be). The wood on the back is gloriously Madagascar dutifully dedicated to the Dalbergian dimension. It has a modified V-shape neck, herringbone top trim, a 1 ¾” nut width, fossil ivory nut, saddle, bridge pins and end pin, a black ebony fingerboard and bridge and a Geib style 545 series hard shell case. It looks beyond beautiful, and it sounds rather outrageous. Lefties, rejoice. $4,639 or,at our cash discount price,$4,500.
